Farm Origins
Bouviers were valued for moving and guarding cattle, protecting farms and livestock, pulling carts, and handling other demanding farm work.
The Bouvier des Flandres developed in the historic Flanders region of Belgium and northern France as an all-purpose farm dog.
Bouviers were valued for moving and guarding cattle, protecting farms and livestock, pulling carts, and handling other demanding farm work.
The breed served in wartime roles including messenger and military work. The World Wars severely reduced Bouvier numbers, and dedicated breeders helped preserve the breed.
Today Bouviers are known as intelligent, substantial and loyal dogs that can succeed as family companions, guardians and working dogs.
The same qualities that made the Bouvier useful on a farmāstrength, intelligence, steadiness and attachment to its peopleāare a large part of what makes the breed special today.
